Hit the books! My favorite CLEP study resources…

Best study guides, resources, and materials for CLEP

There are TONS of free or inexpensive study resources for CLEP exams. Here are my favorites. I have personally used each and every one of these.

Free Resources

  • ModernStates.org – In my opinion, the best and most comprehensive study resource for CLEP exams. It includes free lecture-based courses, reading materials, and practice tests. (Plus, for a limited time, they’re offering testing vouchers to students who use their program.)
  • CLEP College Board Website – Offers a rough outline of expected topics for each exam. (Warning – Do not purchase single study guides for individual exams here. Buy the full-size, official study guide instead. It’s more cost-effective.)
  • Crash Course on YouTube – Has fast-paced abbreviated videos for several CLEP subjects.
  • “Free” CLEP Prep – I’m putting free in quotes because some subjects have free content, but most of the good stuff will cost you about $15 per subject. But well worth it, in my opinion. Great study guides.
  • Learning Express Library (aka PrepStep) – Online practice exams for almost every CLEP subject. Often available for free through universities and libraries. Check with your school to see if they offer access to this service. (SNHU students get free access through the Shapiro Library).
  • Khan Academy – Educational videos on almost every subject imaginable.
  • DegreeForum.net – a great online forum to discuss CLEP and alternative educational resources.

Inexpensive Resources

  • CLEP Official Study Guide – $17 – Let me be clear. This is not a study guide in the traditional sense, but it does come with practice tests for all CLEP exams in a single volume. It’s a must-have if you’re planning on taking multiple exams.
  • InstantCert.com – ($20/month subscription) – Worth every penny. Has flashcards and quizzes for almost every CLEP exam. Personally, I found the flashcards hit-or-miss, but the real value is in their “Subscriber’s Forum“, where test takers post their study outlines and tips for passing the exam.
  • REA Study Guides – ($24) – Books that delve into specific CLEP subjects. along with practice exams. Also available at many libraries.
  • Peterson’s Practice Exams – ($20) – Online, interactive practice exams.

Pricey (But Worth It)

  • Study.com – (~$60/mo subscription) If you plan on taking a lot of CLEPs in a short period of time, this site is worth its weight in gold. It’s pricey, but you get what you pay for. It has in-depth, animated video courses specifically for CLEP subjects. Includes practice quizzes.

Disclosure: Some of the above items are affiliate links, which will provide me with a small bonus that will help keep this site running.

  1. Surprised you do not mention SpeedyPrep. Sent 2 kids to college and saved thousands with them. Getting ready to send child #3 and they will be my choice. Liked them better than a few you mentioned. Very easy to use, priced budget friendly, and they have a 100% money back guarantee.
